Labelle Photo » Ottawa Professional Headshot and Portrait Photographer

I’m very happy to announce that the Madonna Long Term Care Residence, in Orleans Ontario, a suburb of Ottawa, has asked us to to share our talents with their residents!

We will initially start with their 90’s Club, residents who are 90 years young and over. This will involve a group shot and of course indiidual portraits.

At a later date we will return to shoot the other 115 residents.

I cannot thank the awesome talent pool of photographers we have here in Ottawa, especially the Ottawa Flickr Group, for all their contributions and their willingness to participate in this endeavor.

Pictures to follow and some video of behind the scenes action.

One thing we are looking for right now is a little bit of corporate sponsorship, especially for print services. If you know anyone who may wish to help out the Help-Portrait movement here in Ottawa, please let me know!

Thanks,

Jean

Vincent Laforet, a New York based editorial and commercial photographer has posted a video shot in available darkness with a pre-production EOS-1D Mark IV.
Absolutely incredible!

Just over a year ago, Vincent was one of the first photographers to post a video taken with the then new Canon 5D MKII. That short film, Reverie, can be seen here.

Heather passed away this morning at 1A.M

Heather Mankala [March 10, 1998, October 1, 2009] » Labelle Photo - […] On this day, the one year anniversary of Heathers death, I still cannot explain fully the deep impact Heather has had on me. As a photographer, I can say that it was the defining moment whereby my work really meant something. It gave a memento to her grieving parents, brothers and sisters. It connected us, strangers, to one another through a bond I define as spiritual in nature. I wish I was a writer to eloquently express my thoughts and emotions, but I will try to let my camera speak on my behalf. […]

Hello everyone,

Just an update to let you know that Rebekah and myself have just finished our first Help-Portrait assignment.
This was a tough one as it was for a beautiful 11 year old girl at Rogers House who does not have much time left.

To be perfectly honest with all of you, when I initiated this project in Ottawa, I envisioned taking portraits of seniors in nursing/retirement homes, happy children, single moms, people of modest means etc.
When I received the call from CHEO on September 8th and they described Heather and her condition, I was a little nervous because of the responsibility and importance of these photo’s.

We had a a good shoot last Thursday and came away with some awesome shots for Heathers family.

I spent the weekend editing my shots and on more than one occasion my wife Nicole and I got teary eyed seeing Heathers beautiful eyes and their gaze back… as Nicole said, it’s as if Heather is looking back at us through the eyes of an old soul…

This particular session has touched me like no other and will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I’m sure that Rebekah feels the same…

Perhaps later we may post a few pictures of Heather… just not now…

Thank you Rebekah so much for your support and contribution to this shoot… I cannot thank you enough!

Thank you also to Colina who was scheduled to participate in this particular shoot but came down with a cold and could not be near Heather. I know you were with us in spirit, thank you!

Dale Mead - Thanks, Jean, but can you please say a little more of what was wrong with Heather? Your blog is written on the assumption that we either already know what her affliction was (maybe you’re assuming this isn’t new to any reader) or perhaps that it isn’t relevant. Your gracious gesture can be better appreciated if you spell out the context. Perhaps you need a link to an earlier blog that does give the background.

  • July 19, 2010 - 3:54 pm

    Jean Labelle - Hello Dale,

    Thank you for your comments.
Perhaps the links are not very clear in the posts?

I will revisit the post and see how I can improve the visibility of the hotlinks.

Again, thank you for your constructive feedback, much appreciated!

    Take care,
    Jean

I was asked to participate in a multi-model, multi-photograher photo shoot this past weekend at Tailgators, a local sports bar / billiards establishment  and thought I’d share a few shots.

It was a challenging location because of almost non-existent lighting other than the fluorescent lights over the billiard tables.

It got all the shooters in Strobist mode and six hours later we called it a day.

The models below are, starting with the first photo:

My wife purchased a Hot Air Balloon Flight for my birthday this past June. After two previous cancellations due to unfavourable weather conditions, my flight went up as scheduled at the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival this morning! It was well worth the wait as it was an awesome experience!! Jeremy Cowart, another photographer I look up to, has an awesome idea that I would very much like to initiate here in Ottawa. This video and the one on the Facebook link below, will clearly outline how this work and why we should jump on board. So grab a coffee, sit back for a few minutes and watch these to get a better idea of what I would like to achieve this holiday season.

I came across this the other day… but a little background is in order…
One of the photographers I follow to find inspiration and motivation, Zack Arias, had this gentleman, Derrick, show up at his front door. In one of Zacks previous posts, Zack was asking his readers how they get out of ruts and get motivated as a photographer… and out of the blue, Derrick rings his door bell.
Derrick has a strong message, that not only applies to photographers, but is really about Life.
I really hope you find this as meaningful and inspirational as I did!
